Puerto Rican Pilot Lands Plane To Visit McDonald’s

Fly-thru

Gazing at hill after hill, tree after tree and pylon after pylon while on the road can be pretty monotonous. From time to time, there’s the need to break up your journey with a brief bathroom break, or to grab a cup of coffee from a service station, garage or drive-thru.

Sometimes, we make our purchases in the heat of the moment.

Thirst has momentarily taken a grip of our senses and we dart off to grab a drink.

Sometimes we pass our favourite place and simply have to go visit. Even if that means turning a drive-thru into a fly-thru.

Step forwards pilot Rodolfo Rivera and his passenger Jose Torres. Mid-flight, they decided they really wanted a cup of coffee so Rivera landed his plane near a McDonald’s store in Hatillo, Puerto Rico.

It was originally believed that the plane came down due to a technical failure. But the local police force has confirmed that the duo simply wanted a hot drink.

“We thought it was an accident, but they said they are used to doing it. They said that they left [Arceibo] airport and landed there to get coffee,” said one officer.

Rivera used a grassy area near the fast-food store as a makeshift landing strip.

The high-flying and adventurous duo found themselves in handcuffs though the authorities did speak to the pair before they continued on their journey – with their order of McDonald’s coffee.

It is thought that officials were quick on the scene because a small passenger plane crashed in seemingly similar circumstances earlier this year.

Then, the pilot aimed for the Condado Lagoon, a stone’s throw away from Isla Grande Airport.

No casualties were recorded in that instance, which took place near to San Juan, the capital of Puerto Rico.

If we’ve learnt anything from this it is that some people will go to ridiculous lengths to get a cup of coffee.
