Good News For Civets

Coffee

From BBC to national heritage.

It’s good news (finally) for the little civet cats behind Luwak Coffee. In case you didn’t know, Luwak Coffee is the blend of coffee bean that has been first eaten and partially digested by a little animal called a civet, pooped out, dusted off and roasted.

Apparently the taste is simply divine.

Harrods were selling it for a few thousand pounds a bag, until now, its halted the sale until cruelty claims have been investigated.

The BBC recently broadcast a secret mission into Sumatra and discovered how wild civets have been tamed and caged, force fed coffee cherries to be sold at a ridiculously huge mark up to well-off Western coffee chuggers.

Authentic Luwak Coffee is not produced in that manner but it is, of course much more difficult to collect in the quantities to make a profit.

The civets are nocturnal and solitary.

Greed is the main driving factor, coffee farmers have turned to this method and lied about ‘wild Luwak’ authenticity.

Apparently a connoisseur can taste the difference between caged and wild civet- there is no comparison in taste.

Luwak Coffee has given Indonesia a national pride through a product that has been considered by some, a delicacy but, more than that, it’s also independent economic solutions for people who are struggling financially.

It is part of the sovereignty of their cultural heritage, so in order to protect it, the civets and the rainforest itself; much stricter measures have to be taken in this ‘Luwak’ labelling, its time to start weeding the fake stuff from the real deal.

Hopefully in doing so will cut the amount of animal cruelty going into the gourmet beverage.
