The iconic Canadian coffee chain Tim Hortons is currently celebrating its 50th anniversary and as part of the festivities a little bit of the 1960s was transposed into downtown Toronto.

The pop-up store was staffed by workers who were all attired in authentic sixties clothing and the troupe handed out goodies to those who found themselves in the vicinity of the temporary coffee house, which was located in Toronto’s Yonge-Dundas Square.

“With thousands of visitors to Toronto’s Yonge-Dundas Square each day, we knew we could surprise and give back to the highest number of Tim Hortons’ guests in Toronto’s downtown core,” said Michelle Robichaud, a representative for the coffee shop.

However the decision to locate the event in Toronto did draw a number of questions, considering that the first ever Tim Hortons store opened its doors in the nearby city of Hamilton, some seventy kilometres south-west of Ontario’s capital.

Speaking about that choice, Robichaud stated that “choosing just one location to host an event like this is almost impossible.” But a representative from the company, who asked not to be named when speaking to CBC, commented that staff members are planning a birthday party on Saturday that will feature further giveaways and the odd slice of cake.

Celebrations will also be held across the country over the weekend.

A statement released by the company proclaimed that “guests can also look forward to the release of a commemorative online video, which will capture the hearts of Tim Hortons fans who have grown up drinking Canada’s favourite coffee.”

The Canadian company has come a long way since the professional ice-hockey player Tim Horton, then contracted to the Toronto Maple Leafs, opened up his first coffee shop. From a one store operation in Ontario, Tim Hortons now has over 4,000 outlets in its portfolio.
