Nespresso has opened up a brand new facility in Romont, Switzerland, that will serve as the primary place of production for their upcoming VertuoLine of coffee products and Nespresso capsules that will be destined for the Northern American market.

The plant, which reportedly cost in the region of $310 million, is geared towards the preference of ‘large cup’ coffee (Nestle’s own words) in the United States and Canada, which was launched last year to consumer acclaim.

The capsule market in North America is estimated to be worth about $5 billion a year.

Nespresso has said that the Romont plant, which currently employs 125 people, will set a new standard for sustainable operation: The facility has already received Gold LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification for its energy efficient planning and 20% of the materials used during the construction phase were recycled.

In a press release, the company also stated that the production facility is a ‘centre of coffee innovation, excellence and expertise’ whilst Jean-Marc Duvoisin, CEO of Nestle Nespresso, had this to say:

“This is where top quality green coffee, carefully selected from the world’s best coffee regions, is transformed by our highly skilled coffee experts into Nespresso Grands Crus.”

Although a nation famed for its chocolate, latest reports indicate that Switzerland actually exports, by value, far more coffee than any other product.
