The rabbit hole of McCoffee

Coffee

McCafé is on its way to a store near you.

Fast food giant McDonald’s have tried really hard recently to convince people that their food is not a chemistry experiment, I wonder how unhealthy they can really make coffee?

The chain stated pushing McCafe own brand coffee products in Melbourne, Australia in 1993 and noticed a 15% increase in sales compared to those outlets that did not offer gourmet coffee.

Their main selling strategy seems to mainly be undercutting Starbucks where ever possible, their main point of competition down under and in America.

McCafe are also packaging their own instant, whole beans and pods to sell for customers to take home and enjoy, as part of a Kraft business deal circa 2011.

Kraft make no mention to particular practises, statistics or ethos into how they source their coffee, at all.

There is a vague image of a ‘sustainability wheel’ which denotes areas that could be improved such as waste, packaging, energy conservation with no mention of how, or if at all, these things actually are being improved upon.

On the McDonald’s website, it states that all coffee served in Europe, Australia and New Zealand and is sourced with accordance with regulation set down by the Rainforest Alliance.

What about the rest of the world?

Does take home coffee count as ‘served’?

When attempting to dig through McDonald’s website, we were guided to a separate video link- that on exiting, we were asked to confirm your understanding that ‘You are leaving the McDonald’s Web site.

The policies, including the privacy policy, on the site you are going to may vary from McDonald’s.

Be sure to review the policies of every site that you visit.

McDonald’s is not responsible for the policies and practices of other companies.’

So our line of investigation went cold…feel free to have a look for yourself.

Either way, a medium skinny latte will rack up about 130 calories, not bad.

A Frappé Mocha will hit you right about 450 calories, put that on anything McDonald’s calls ‘breakfast’ and that’s pretty much most your days’ worth of calories gone right there.
