Discretion is the better part of valour for Bottom’s Up

Six weeks ago reports initially emerged that a number of residents of Clovis, California were up in arms about the presence of a bikini themed coffee shop that had recently opened up in Fresno County city.
Entitled ‘Bottom’s Up’, the java jaunt drew the ire of some locals thanks to their provocative drink names and the less than formal attire of their baristas. After opening in January a petition was started by Candice Eslick, who lives nearby, demanding change.
However Clovis City officials noted that the shop had been abiding to county rules with city Attorney David Wolfe stating that any offences would have to be “regular practice” before there could be any council led interference.
But that did not stop Eslick from campaigning against the raunchy drink titles such as ‘Screamer’ and it appears that the co-owner of the coffee house, Alexandra Ireland, has decided that discretion is the better part of valour.
Originally she stated to the local that the emphasis of her shop was focused upon “the quality of the coffee and customer service,” but in the wake of the campaign –which gathered 150 signatures according to the Fresno Bee – a decision has been made to tone down the names of their hot beverages.
“We want to be part of the city,” she said. “Sometimes the war is not worth the effort.”
Even though a further report was conducted by Clovis City Council where again the findings were that Bottom’s Up was ‘in compliance with city ordinances and state law’, the menu now sports advertisements for the likes of a ‘Tropical Kiss’, a ‘Sweet Cheeks’ and a ‘Hawaiian Night’.
Council Member Bob Whalen also noted that even if Eslick had continued petitioning against the bar, the Council “would not have responded”.
The alterations seem to have pacified Candice Eslick who stated that the voices of the 150 people who signed the petition have been heard.
What do you think of the judgement call taken by the owners of Bottom’s Up?
