The only nationally owned big fuel company has decided that coffee is certainly a profitable part of its business and has decided to promote sales of takeaway coffee to boost profits.

Did you realise that it is 50 years since Jamaica gained its independence?
It seems to be the year of the jubilee as this country is also holding one this year!

It is ten years since the Philippine Coffee Board Inc began and the plans for the celebrations are underway.
There is a nickname for the annual coffee festival which has arisen in the Philippines to celebrate the Board – ‘Coffee Origins.’
It is a popular day and Philippine coffee is promoted at the event.
Thousands of visitors to the Coffee Origins festival will get a free cup!

You don’t have to look too hard these days, to find some doom and gloom story about cut backs, job losses and salary freezes.
However, there was some good news in the Charleston Regional Business Journal recently – Lollicup USA will be opening up a new facility in Dorchestor County and this will boost job opportunities.
It is expected that the new facility will create 40 new positions.

It seems that companies with a nose for a good bargain are circling the Northern Coffee Corporation Limited.
The Zambia Development Agency has revealed that three companies have shown an interest in the coffee company – apparently, the agency had injected funds into the Northern Coffee Corporation (which went into receivership), to try to boost the business, so that it might be saleable as a going concern.
Who are the three interested parties?
Savenda Consortium and Group Africa Agric from South Africa, SilverStreet Private Equity Strategies and also Olam International Limited have expressed an interest in the coffee company.

Gloria Jean’s Coffee is one of Australia’s premium brand coffee products and several news stories have recently suggested that India is starting to rather take to the brand.
Gloria Jean’s Coffee has been sold in India throughout the last four years and it seems that things are now starting to pay off.
The master franchisee of the brand has revealed that things are going so well, that they are looking to expand at the rate of some 30-40 cafes on an annual basis in the country.
Now that things are breaking even, Gloria Jean’s Coffee wants to make the most of the Indian market.

This is an event which is held annually, to help provide funds for the excellent Macmillan Cancer Support charity.
Coffee mornings will be held across the length and breadth of the country on 28 September.

Much as we love our coffee shops, it’s worth remembering that public support alone is not the only requirement for a successful business.
As with other properties, the planning legislation has to be complied with, to make sure that the use of the premises – whether as a retail outlet, a restaurant, coffee shop or residential premises – needs to be appropriately dealt with.
This is Gloucestershire has recently reported a story of a coffee shop which began to make alterations to their premises without the necessary planning permission being in place upfront.
