There have been reports of late about the success of independent coffee shops.

Whereas many of our high streets bear a remarkable similarity to each other, occupied by the national chains of retail shops, it seems that you can still make a mark as an independent coffee shop.

It has been said that, although the big coffee chains have a significant place in the coffee shop market, so too do well-run and welcoming independent coffee shops.

Again and again, we hear stories of how they are at the hub of their local community and how their savvy, entrepreneurial owners create individual and atmospheric places to relax and enjoy a cup of joe.

One such news story appeared in the Reading Chronicle of late.

The Workhouse Coffee Company in this town has just been nominated for a Reading Retail Award.

The customers of the shop obviously think highly of this eight-year old coffee shop.

What are the signature attractions of this coffee house?

There is much use of international coffee blends in the shop.

Similarly, the staff employed at the shop come from a variety of different countries.

Of course, the quality of the service and the food and drink for sale also contributes to the popularity of the shop.

Which independent coffee shop in your vicinity would you nominate for a local award?

Do you have a favourite indie shop that welcomes you and makes coffee just the way you like it?
