Is coffee the new dessert?

Would you prefer coffee or dessert?

The Edinburgh News has published an interesting online article recently investigating into whether coffee in all its glorious forms is becoming the new dessert choice.

It is not the first coffee industry-related news article to touch on the subject, as a new coffee observation seems to be afoot.

In our world of weight conscious (and cost conscious) diners, is coffee becoming the new dessert?

As noted in the press, it seems that in Edinburgh, diners in restaurants are most likely in the United Kingdom to choose a coffee instead of a dessert.

Brighton and Hove and Capital restaurant goers are also likely to swap dessert in favor of a cup of joe.

These results were discovered in a recently reported OnePoll survey.

The coffee option seems a sensible choice for those who have eaten a lot already, who don’t have a particularly sweet tooth, are watching their waistline or who understand the great wealth of delicious coffee on the market.

The research revealed by the poll (which was commissioned by United Coffee UK & Ireland) also discovered that 80% of us might consider coffee instead of a pudding and 27% regularly make that option when eating out.

What are the reasons given in the poll for this choice? Sixty eight percent said that it was the quality and taste of coffee which made people opt for the beverage instead of the dessert.

The only down side that we can see is that a slice of cheesecake or a good old fashioned scoop of vanilla ice-cream won’t keep you up all night if you finish your meal after 9pm, so be warned; maybe choose a latte or cappuccino rather than a double espresso shot or if you are slightly flush, why not indulge in both?
