Have you heard of the popular book series, which started with the First Ladies’ Detective Agency?

The fictional detective protagonist, is one of Botswana’s first lady detectives and she succeeds in solving various crimes around the African country.

The real women of Botswana have also hit the headlines recently for their entrepreneurial business skills, striking out for women in the country for real.

What’s the story?

As reported in The Monitor, two ladies in their late 50s planted their commercial coffee farm in 2012 and they are now in the second season.

And it seems that they are doing very well for themselves, thank you very much.

The two ladies, Motlalepula Raditshaba and Elizabeth Selogelo have been farming since they were in their teens.

They wowed experts and patrons at the Tonota Agricultural Show as they showcased their coffee products and offered coffee tasting.

They reportedly inspired queries about their ‘pleasant tasting and fresh coffee’.

The coffee beans found their way to Selogelo from the Impala Agricultural Research offices and four hectares were planted last year.

Thanks to the good feedback, the ladies would like to plant five hectares this year.

The coffee does not have caffeine and is a milder brand.

It is a popular crop for the ladies as it can be harvested more than three times every year, does not need a lot of watering and doesn’t require the amount of attention like sorghum which are a favourite of birds.

Once harvested, it takes three months to dry, pound, package and sell the product.
