A ‘forlorn’ intruder receives coffee after a botched break-in

From Sweden comes a tale of compassion and coffee.

A couple in Kvarnåsen, a small village in Northern Sweden, were awoken in the middle of the night after hearing a noise emanating from balcony of their apartment. Upon a closer look the homeowner, Tomas Holmberg, found an intruder lurking and proceeded to overpower the would-be-thief, who according to reports, failed to muster any kind of significant resistance.

What would you do in this situation?

Hopefully, you would call the police – but how many of you would follow in the footsteps of Mr Holmberg and do what he did?

He proceeded to make the hapless interloper a cup of coffee whilst waiting for the local police force to arrive.

‘He looked forlorn and quite cold so I thought he could use a gulp of coffee,’ Holmberg said to the local newspaper, the Västerbottens Folkblad.

The offender subsequently apologised and calmly sat there in the kitchen, sipping his coffee and waiting until the authorities appeared a short time later. The compassion and the offer of a coffee obviously counted for something.

In Sweden, an individual has the right to make a citizens’ arrest (envarsgripanden) when a perpetrator is caught in the act of committing a crime, provided the culprit is turned over to police as soon as possible.
