After coffee flavoured wine comes cappuccino flavoured crisps

What is it with these summer months that are making everybody go coffee crazy?

We wouldn’t normally complain about such a turn – consider that we absolutely adore the stuff – but there comes a point when you begin to wonder if certain lines have been crossed. The creation of coffee flavoured wine was one, and now there has been another debatable concoction that is set to hit the shelves in the not too distant future

Cappuccino flavoured crisps, or chips, or whatever you want to call them.

Frito-Lay, the snack division of PepsiCo who also operate the famous Walker brand in England, will be announcing that the coffee-flavoured crisps will be one of the four finalists in its annual “Do Us a Flavor” competition. The event allows people to create new flavours for the company, with the most popular option with consumer’s netter the ‘inventor’ a cool $1million.

The Cappuccino crisps will be duking it out with Wasabi Ginger, Cheddar Bacon Mac & Cheese, and Mango Salsa to take top spot – and given the number of coffee lovers there is in the United States, we wouldn’t bet against it taking top honours.

Frito-Lays have moved to allay fears about caffeine content, just in case somebody decided to gorge themselves on the crisps with the intention of getting a monumental rush. They do not contain any caffeine; nor do they contain any real coffee.

Interestingly – or bizarrely, depending on your point of view – this is not the first time that the company has dabbled in java and caffeine-associated products. Last year a variety of Cracker Jacks were pulled off shop shelves in America, officially due to a lack of sales. Despite the company line however, rumours persist that they were removed because the regulatory Food and Drug Administration body were worried about the widespread creation of caffeinated items of food.
