The Atlas Espresso in Hobart, Tasmania has set a coffee-centric record that has been officially recognised as a Guinness World Record. Their record is for making the most cappuccinos in a one hour period.
A large crowd had gathered to witness the attempt and thankfully none of them left disappointed. Locals were, according to reports, pressed up against the shop windows and sprawled out of the premises and into the footpath outside and all chanted in unison to count down the final ten seconds.
Café co-owner Suzanne Stag took on the challenge at the tail end of last year and made a grand total of 289 cappuccinos, surpassing the previous record by 18.
‘[It] was a huge relief’, Suzanne said afterwards. ‘A lot of people were involved and everyone just expected [that] I would break the record. I realised that there was little margin for error and one small mistake would ruin the attempt.’
Not everything went perfectly though, during the sixty-minute spell, a total of eleven coffees were rejected because they were either spilled, or they short on the required volume as set out in the official rules and regulations.
Thankfully, everything went to plan and Suzanne passed the previous record with five minutes remaining.
But, none of the cappuccinos created went to waste. ‘We gave all the coffees I made away free but asked for a gold coin donation (a $1 donation or more) to support Movember,’ Suzanne mentioned afterwards before saying that the entire event raised more than $1,200.
This hasn’t been the first time that the Atlas Espresso has attempted to set a world record for making coffee. Back in 2011 a team brewed 434 coffees on one machine in one hour, but the effort was not ratified because the official Guinness World Record rules state that only one person could be an active participant
