The results of the 2013 World Barista Championship are in!
Did you know that each year, there is a global competition to find the best barista on the planet?
The aptly named World Barista Championship is held in a different country each year.
So this year, where was it?
Melbourne in Australia. And who won the title?
An American barista called Pete Licata. Matthew Perger, an Australian, took the second place.
The competition in this event is pretty fierce.
Each participating country sends over their national champion to battle it out for the overall title of the world’s best barista.
This year there were 51 competitors, although only six of these reached the final on Sunday 26th May.
A crowd of about a thousand people watched the finals at the Melbourne Showground.
As usual, the baristas had to prepare cups of cappuccino, espresso and a signature drink.
They also had to give a presentation for fifteen minutes, explaining about their choice of coffee bean and roasting style.
So what was the winner’s signature coffee drink?
He used chilled espresso, an infusion of orange peel, lemongrass and quinine together with palm sugar syrup.
The barista talked about the journey of the coffee bean in his presentation.
The competition is a great thing.
As well as showcasing the excellence of today’s baristas, it also urges them onto ever impressive heights and improves the general craftsmanship in barista work.
